Didn’t feel completely on today, the 365×2 is a PR only in that I have no PR for a double. I’m pretty sure I’ve tripled this weight before, but it’s not in my current records. Watever, I did more reps than prescribed, and I wasn’t pushing it. Likewise on the leg press, I’m just a little off today. I’ll repeat at this weight after a deload week, and if it still doesn’t go for 3×15, I’ll switch to 5×10 and keep going.

One of those days that I really didn’t want to train, distracted with work, etc. Went and did one more than I ‘had’ to, and turned out it was a PR (mostly because I have no records for 4 rep sets, but I’ll take it)

Leg Press
3×15 @ 310

HS Leg Curl

My right foot really hurts, has for about a week or so, not sure what it is (no swelling, and I don’t recall injuring it), so cardio is a bit of a chore. It was also much harder to get my HR up and it took longer, and I felt like I could go for an hour if my feet didn’t hurt.

Wait… What??

From a (slightly gushing) news report of President Obama’s speech in Ghana.

One evil he came here to fight is the pernicious mix of greed, famine and war that has kept Africa down. He delivered a blunt message that from his predecessors might not have been received the same way. Instead, it was cast by aides as hard truths from a loving cousin.

“No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or police can be bought off by drug traffickers,” he said. “No business wants to invest in a place where the government skims 20 percent off the top, or the head of the port authority is corrupt. No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of brutality and bribery. That is not democracy, that is tyranny, and now is the time for it to end.”

Empahsis mine.

Has something changed?  Does not the US government skim more than 20% off the profits of businesses?  Is the President suggesting that the income tax should not be higher than 20%?  The government skims 14% just in FICA/medicare for crying out loud, then ranges up to a 39% (if they have their way) marginal tax rate.  My personal effective tax rate is nearly 50%!

I would like some clarification.  Either this was a mistake, he (or his teleprompter) thinks we’re all stupid, he’s lying, or his policies have significantly changed.

I know which one I think it is.

Bad Study

I don’t understand how this crap gets published.

Experts say a spectrum of natural sleeping and waking rhythms exists, ranging from extreme morning people to extreme “night owls.”

A new study examines how morning people compare with night owls on a strength test and looks at what other physiological processes may contribute to their performance.

Researchers tested participants’ leg muscle strength at various points in the day. They looked at nine “early birds” and nine “night owls,” who were classified as such based on a questionnaire.

Surprisingly, morning people’s strength tends to remain constant throughout the day, but night owls have peak performance in the evening, said researchers from the University of Alberta in Canada.

“We thought that morning people would be better at this in the morning, but they never changed,” said study co-author Olle Lagerquist, a Ph.D. candidate in neurophysiology at the University of Alberta.

n=18?? Self classified??  Please.  Absolutely meaningless, other than perhaps pointing out that this might be something that should be studied using a meaningful study.  This one, though, should have been completely ignored by the press.  One more lesson, I guess, that science you see in the mainstream press should be examined with a critical eye (global warming, HFCS, etc)

By the way, I went from being a night owl to morning person.  It wasn’t that hard, and made a pretty big difference in my productivity.  While I tend to lose steam in the afternoon (which is when I usually train, so I’m a big fan of Monster), I often perk up late at night and can be pretty creative.

One other thing:  don’t let this kind of article keep you from finding what’s optimal for you.
