ME Squat, 1/27/13

Between a sick dog (she had a sarcoma removed, doing fine, but took some energy and time) and getting in to the swing of the new business (which is a TON of fun), training got derailed.  Back to it today, pretty proud, because I had plenty of excuses to not go.

Not Political

DHS delays arrest of man who has overstayed his visa and violated probation for sex offense.  Why?

Federal immigration agents were prepared to arrest an illegal immigrant and registered sex offender days before the November elections but were ordered by Washington to hold off after officials warned of “significant interest” from Congress and news organizations because the suspect was a volunteer intern for Sen. Robert Menendez, according to internal agency documents provided to Congress.

[…]

According to those documents, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Newark had arranged to arrest Sanchez at the local prosecutor’s office on Oct. 25. That was fewer than two weeks before the election.

Noting that Sanchez was a volunteer in Menendez’s Senate office, ICE officials in New Jersey advised that the arrest “had the possibility of garnering significant congressional and media interest” and were “advised to postpone the arrest” until officials in Washington gave approval. The documents describe a conference call between officials Washington and New Jersey to “determine a way forward, given the potential sensitivities surrounding the case.”

The senators, in a letter to the Homeland Security Department, said the agency documents showed that Sanchez’s arrest “was delayed by six weeks,” as AP had reported. They asked for details about the department’s review of potentially sensitive, high profile immigration cases when arrests are delayed.

But:

In a letter Monday, Assistant DHS Secretary Nelson Peacock said an allegation that the government delayed Sanchez’s arrest “for political purposes” was categorically false.

Sure.  Why would you think it was political?

Menendez, D-N.J., who advocates aggressively for pro-immigration policies, was re-elected on Nov. 6 with 58 percent of the vote. Menendez said last month that his staff was notified about the case immediately before AP’s story, he learned about the case from the AP and he knew nothing about whether or why DHS had delayed the arrest.

Nothing to see here.  I must say, the press is much more interested in these sorts of stories than they were in October of 2012.  I guess they got their guy, now they want to try to hold Him accountable.  Hate to break this to you, but with no more elections, there is no way to do that.

Telling Example of Arrogance

I don”t think I’ve seen a more telling example of the arrogance of the Obama Administration (and, frankly, of the statist elite in general.)

When informed about the Israeli decision, Obama, who has a famously contentious relationship with the prime minister, didn’t even bother getting angry. He told several people that this sort of behavior on Netanyahu’s part is what he has come to expect, and he suggested that he has become inured to what he sees as self-defeating policies of his Israeli counterpart.

In the weeks after the UN vote, Obama said privately and repeatedly, “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are.”

This is the same attitude they have about you.  You don’t know your own best interests, so you need them to tell you what they are.  You are not responsible enough to own a firearm.  You are not responsible enough to decide what kind of light bulb to use.  You are not responsible enough to choose a non-smoking bar.  You are not responsible enough to pick your own car.  You are not responsible enough to choose your own health care.

Israel isn’t responsible enough to run their own country.

When someone else says it perfectly…

Warren Meyer at Coyote Blog explains why the minimum wage is a disaster.  An excerpt:

The minimum wage raises the first rung on the ladder of success higher than Bobby can possibly reach. This is not an accident. Early proponents of the minimum wage in the early 20th century supported it precisely because it protected white workers from competition from blacks attempting to enter the work force. The minimum wage began as, and still is, a tool of oppression, preventing young men like Bobby from gaining access to good employment.

Today, the unemployment among black teens has risen to nearly 40%. This is because the government has been working for years to help older white workers with political clout keep men like Bobby out of the workforce, and the minimum wage is their most powerful tool for doing so.

Understand now why unions are so often for the minimum wage?  It creates another barrier to entry to protect their jobs.

The IRS Putting Mom and Pop Out of Business

More crony capitalism, this time via the IRS.

At the end of last year, I blogged about new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules that require small-time tax preparers to pay annual fees, take IRS exams, and obtain 15 hours of expensive continuing education.  Attorneys and certified public accountants are exempt from the requirements, and big tax firms like H&R Block actually backed the regulation, which will put many of their seasonal competitors out of business.

Where is the outcry from the Left?
