Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

If you normalize the data to account for homocide and automobile crashes (the US has more of both than anywhere else, and they skew life expectancy numbers but are not an indicator of health care effacy), the US has the highest life expectancy in the world

While there are always issues with statistical measures of most health care metrics*, this is the kind of thing we need to do more often.  Use your critical thinking skills, and read more than just what one side or the other presents.  And more than what the media present.

(* One of the biggest issues is how infant mortality is calculated.  In many countries, a baby that dies within 48 hours of birth (or more!) is considered stillborn, where in the US it is not.  That significantly changes the numbers, but is generally ignored by people with something to sell.)

Because The One would never lie!

The disninformation Czar says:

For the record, the President has consistently said that if you like your insurance plan, your doctor, or both, you will be able to keep them.

Yes, yes he sure did.

But if you actually read the bill, you’ll discover that the legislation as written will not allow you to keep them.

Sec. 205, Pg. 102, for example, which says that if you are eligible for Medicaid, you are automatically enrolled.   Or maybe Sec. 312, Pg 145, which says an employer must auto enroll employees in the health care plan.

Details, details.

Wait… What??

From a (slightly gushing) news report of President Obama’s speech in Ghana.

One evil he came here to fight is the pernicious mix of greed, famine and war that has kept Africa down. He delivered a blunt message that from his predecessors might not have been received the same way. Instead, it was cast by aides as hard truths from a loving cousin.

“No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or police can be bought off by drug traffickers,” he said. “No business wants to invest in a place where the government skims 20 percent off the top, or the head of the port authority is corrupt. No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of brutality and bribery. That is not democracy, that is tyranny, and now is the time for it to end.”

Empahsis mine.

Has something changed?  Does not the US government skim more than 20% off the profits of businesses?  Is the President suggesting that the income tax should not be higher than 20%?  The government skims 14% just in FICA/medicare for crying out loud, then ranges up to a 39% (if they have their way) marginal tax rate.  My personal effective tax rate is nearly 50%!

I would like some clarification.  Either this was a mistake, he (or his teleprompter) thinks we’re all stupid, he’s lying, or his policies have significantly changed.

I know which one I think it is.
